Villanova Blows Second Straight Double Digit Lead, Loses in OT at Buzzer

After Saturday's second half debacle at home against Notre Dame, the Villanova Wildcats provided a near mirror image tonight at the Wells Fargo Center vs. UConn. The Cats let a 19 first point half lead evaporate by halftime, and a buzzer beater by Shabazz Napier in overtime handed Nova a 73-70 loss. For the defending champion Huskies, Jeremy Lamb poured in a career-high 32 points, while Andre Drummond dropped 8 points and grabbed 11 boards. Four players scored in double figures for the Wildcats. Dominic Cheek notched 23 points, but he also had 6 turnovers. Ty Johnson scored 14 points, JayVaughn Pinkston had 13, and Mouphtaou Yarou contributed 11 points. Johnson didn't help the cause with 4 turnovers.

Without James Bell and Maalik Wayns, Villanova simply does not have enough quality ballhandlers to run the team. After a horrific start by UConn, which allowed the home squad to build yet another double digit lead, the Huskies switched up their defense and started to press the young Villanova guards. With the Cats unable to generate a fluid offense, UConn stormed back to take the lead late. Villanova actually led by 2 with twenty seconds left, but Cheek threw a terrible inbounds pass, and UConn converted that into a game-tying bucket. Then, in overtime, Ty Johnson made a layup with five ticks on the clock, but the Huskies pushed the ball right back up the court, and Shabazz Napier dapped a 35 foot three to stun the Wells Fargo Center crowd. Not much else to say at this point.

Just mind numbing

This team is so clueless and has no instincts. At 47 , I would have been closer to Napier than Cheek. Yarou is actually regressing . I do want to give props to Sutton. I have been Anti Sutton since the day he walked on campus and he has the 10th most talent on the team but his effort is tremendous and you cant teach 6-11. He actually looks like an athlete now and I would take him over Yarou at this point. He actually try’s to dunk and blocks shots.

A few bright spots

Pinkston and Sutton look great. Hopefully Wright sticks with the 3 big men in the lineup when Wayns and Bell come back. A starting 5 of Wayns, Cheek, Pinkston, Yarou, and Sutton looks promising.

Except for the fact that Mouph is lost

JVP continues to impress though. Half an argument for Big East Rookie of the Year with how much he means to this team and the fact that he’s CARRYING the team.

I was actually..

impressed by them. This team battles and hasn’t given up. Cheek’s offensive game has gotten better and a bit smarter, but Lamb destroyed him on the other end. Cheek couldn’t guard him to save his life. Ty Johnson was under siege the whole game. I’ll take 4 turnovers in 41 minutes of game time. JVP reminds me of Larry Johnson.

agree

I give credit to Johnson’s drive to tie the game in OT, it was great and was overshadowed by Napier’s shot.

ty got lucky on a bunch of plays though...

shouldve been called for 3 or 4 shove offs late in the game which would have been turnovers…i was not very impressed by uconn; drummond looks like a monster in spurts then seems uninterested, napier disappears for long stretches, oriakhi is just having a terrible season, and their free throw shooting was horrendous

I wasn't impressed...

with UConn either. Drummond wasn’t anything special. If Yarou had a clue, Drummond wouldn’t have gotten a couple of those put backs.

Ty did get lucky, but you can only count the ones they call. Plus, he showed great composure getting the tying basket.
