Just Another Heartbreaking Loss For Villanova

I really can't even explain it anymore. Maybe Jay Wright just is this poor of a late-game coach - but it feels like so much more. No lead is safe, apparently. After blowing a 19-point lead against Marquette (AT HOME), Villanova somehow upped itself last night at The Well when they blew a 20-point lead to Notre Dame.

They need Maurice Sutton of all people to save the day and give them a chance to win in overtime. But they couldn't come through in crunch time, as has been the case for the better part of 3 seasons now.

No, this Villanova team is not particularly deep, especially with both Maalik Wayns and James Bell out injured. But consider that Notre Dame played pretty much 5 players for the entire game, save a few cameos. And they're missing their best player in Tim Abromaitis. So that should be no excuse for Villanova.

It was my first game of the season that I've attended, and I already want to forget it. There are good signs on this team. Dominic Cheek had a good game, and JayVaughn Pinkston had yet another monster night. And Mo Sutton? Earlier this season it was a foregone conclusion that he shouldn't be invited back for a 5th season. Show me anyone suggesting that these days after he answered the bell yet again when given the opportunity.

But it's hard to stay positive about the future when the same old things keep happening and this team can't figure it out. It's been 3 years now of blown leads. I'm almost numb to it.

At the end of the day, it's just another heartbreaking loss in a few heartbreaking seasons.

Execution.

When your team has 4 baskets in 20 minutes like Nova did in the second half, there is a failure of execution on the players and the coach. If adjustments were made well they never worked or the players did not come through on the adjustments.
Cheek had a nice game as did JVP. But shot selection is still an issue. Johnson has nice game, but he missed some good looks.
I give this group one more year. All the pieces are back next year, no excuse for not having a 20 win season, none.

I'm starting to lose serious faith in Wright

How one team can come out and look so good in one half and so terrible the next. What is going on at halftime? It’s like he’s telling them to take their foot off the gas.

We have no reliable shooters

All opposing teams must do is play zone or clog the lane and that’s what ND did in the second half. We have no body who can consistently hit an open shot and that’s if they are sharing the ball. Not since Dante left have we had a threat other than a guard driving to the basket. Jay has to develop a new system for offense. JVP and Wayns, when he comes back, can’t carry the offense.

Good point.

Last in the Big East in 3 pt. shooting.
I haven’t lost faith in Jay yet. I am sure he didn’t tell JVP to launch a 25footer after a timeout and down 2 with 1:30 to go. After JVP threw up the air ball, camera was on Jay and he just had both hands in his face saying to himself I am sure " that is not what we talked about at all"

Game was much...

like my night. Get drunk and feel good for most of it. Ends with a headache.

Jay needs to go

I am not sure how much more evidence people need to admit that Jay needs to be fired. He looks the part and says all the right things but this team has not executed with the game on the line since Dante and Scotty left. You can put that all on the players if you want but how do you explain 3 collapses of 16 or more leads in the last few weeks and how to you explain Ty Johnson taking the key shots against Nd. Where was the timeout to set up a play for Cheek or JVP? Where was the coaching on the inbounds play when we are up 60-58 with 23 seconds left and the worst pass in the history of division 1 basketball is thrown. We can’t get the ball inbounds when we are in the double bonus and if we make 2 free throws the game is basically over. Here is the Problem. These are different players. Are you Jay apologists still blaming the players. He is just a horrible game coach. It’s that simple and if you don’t get that, you know nothing about basketball
