Final: Villanova Scorches The Nets, Routs DePaul 87-71
Following a tumultuous couple of weeks where the fanbase began to come to grips with the fact that this Villanova Wildcats team just wasn't very good, Jay Wright's squad came out today and crushed the DePaul Blue Demons at The Pavilion, winning 87-71.
After the abomination against South Florida and DePaul's impressive win against Pitt, it looked like this might be another tough outing for 'Nova. Instead, it turned into a W, and a relatively easy one at that.
More after The Jump.
Have a look at the box score of this game, and you're going to see some pretty incredible stats. In some ways, it's hard to come to grips with.
Villanova shot 57% from the field.
Villanova went 4-9 (the number of attempts is more in line for what we're looking for) from 3-point range.
Villanova had 27 turnovers. I repeat. 27 turnovers, including an astounding 8 by freshman Ty Johnson.
Villanova went 27-34 from the FT line.
And all of that translated into perhaps their best offensive output of the season behind 21 points from Maalik Wayns, 20 points from Dominic Cheek, 14 points from Mouphtaou Yarou and 13 points from JayVaughn Pinkston.
I just don't know what to think anymore after seeing this type of performance with so much good, and so much bad.

Turnovers...
with the higher # of possessions, not sure the high number is as bad as it looks at first blush. What is the rate per possession as compared to other games?
Sigh.
I need a statistical guy for that
But even though it probably isn’t as bad as it looks, 27 turnovers is more than I can remember, in any basketball game, ever.

Turnover Percentage
Nova had 82 possessions. and 28 turnovers. That’s 34.1% turnover percentage.
Among Big East teams, both in an out of conference, that was the third highest TO% so far this season. Behind Seton Hall (against SU) and Pitt (against Duquesne). Oddly, Pitt won the Duquesne game as well.
Filling the hole cures many ills
Cats shot 63% in the first half and 57% for the game. With most opponents, understanding it was a track meet, you can overcome 27 turnovers by shooting 57%. They looked way more aggressive today and drove to the rim much more than in the USF game. Last game they seemed to always go for an extra pass.
Will need that aggressiveness and more vs. The Orange. Bring ’em on!

Ballpark Stat
The commentator said both teams were shooting every 13 seconds. That means Nova had around 85-90 possessions…maybe even 100. Either way, 27% – 33% turnovers per possession is huge.

Had to work.
Actually surprised. The turnovers as everyone has mentioned was a shocker. But you have to like this win.
Finally
should be the headline.
It’s good to see we’ve finally cut down on the 3’s and got to the foul line 34 times. The 27 turnovers look like a big, new problem, but all of the lost possessions on bad shots (particularly from beyond the arc) should be considered just as bad. For example, last game we shot 4-20 from 3; that’s 16 misses which led to 12-16 changes of possession (we only had 4 offensive rebounds). So add those to our 6 turnovers last game and our number of lost possession grows to 18-22. I didn’t get to see the game today so I’m saying this only based on the game recap and user comments: if more turnovers are a byproduct of the more aggressive approach (driving to the hoop more) then I’m more comfortable with that statistic only as long as they are actually a result of playing to their offensive strengths and that they learn from their mistakes .
Zactly
Better late than never. We finally put an emphasis on going to the basket and put away the 3 ball. I think we were 4 for 6 in first half and 0 for 4 second half. And some of our threes were inside out passes after some penetration. Much better. Guards going to the hole, big men taking high percentage shots, getting to the line… This isn’t very complicated. Nice job to the coaching staff for adjusting and keeping the discipline. But we can still play bigger – we need JVP, Kennedy, and Mouph on the floor together.
