Final: Syracuse Powers Past Villanova 79-66
So that's what a basketball team is supposed to look like. Listen, I hate Syracuse. But that's an impressive basketball team. I don't know what Dion Waiters did in the offseason to improve that much, but wow. Just wow.
The Syracuse Orange dominated our Villanova Wildcats tonight - and I'm not even angry about it. I managed to catch some of the 2nd half at a bar, but in talking to some of the guys who had been watching the game, it sounds like we were never really in it.
Checking out the box score tells me a few things:
- 'Cuse are a balanced team. Sure, Waiters was awesome and James Southerland had a pretty nice game himself, but they just have so many weapons. Scoop Jardine, Kris Joseph and Brandon Triche did nothing, and it really didn't matter. That's the mark of an elite team.
- Ty Johnson needs to cut down on the TO's. But hey, he's a freshman being thrust into a role that he probably didn't see coming. This year will only help him.
- Maalik Wayns. Oof.
- Mouphtaou Yarou. Oof. From the floor anyways.
It's hard to win when our best two players don't show up. Especially against a good team like Syracuse, who we caught on a bit of an off-night. That says it all.

Cheek - OOOOF.
You didnt watch enough of the game I guess to not include his ooffery.
Cheek...
This says it all – 1 for 7 on 3PFG, 3 of 7 on FT. Take out Cheek’s 7 3PFGA attempts and they are 5 of 13, a not horrible 38.4% from downtown. He simply needs to stop shooting from 3.
How does JVP only get 19 minutes of run? He’s our best player.
I’m surprised Kennedy got 34 minutes. He’s raw, but you get some glimpses. This summer, he better shoot a thousand FT’s a day.
Sigh.

Cheek is terrible.
JVP has improved so much since the beginning of the year. The more he plays the better he will get. Not playing for a year has to be pretty tough. He definitely needs to see more time on the court. Although sometimes he does get careless and goes to the rim out of control…hopefully that will stop as he matures.
Kennedy shows signs of greatness when he isn’t on the stripe. Spin moves. Rebounding like a freak. Looks real comfortable down low for a freshman. But if he can’t make a free throw all the opponents need to do is hack him up.
Oh….and Cheek is terrible.
Cheek continues to disapoint.
Did I miss something here? 1 of 7 from 3, missed 4 foul shots, continues to jack up 3’s. Yarou gets 12 boards, 5 offensive, misses one foul shot ( 8 of 9), and yes 2 of 10 from the floor is the bad mark. But he and Wayns are the two who get the blame for this loss. The 3 of them have been inconsistent all year to say the least. If I were Jay I would bring Cheek and Wayns off the bench for the rest of the year..
The juniors...
were a combined 6-30 from the field, 20%.
Sigh.

My starting 5 would be...
Leek, Ty Johnson, Bell, JVP, Mouph. Bring Hilliard in to spell Leek or Johnson, Cheek and Kennedy to spell Bell, JVP and Mouph. Use Ash fo fill in where needed.
Sutton needs to be used more. He can give you 5 or 6 good minutes a game.
Sigh.

I'd go JVP, Mouph, and Kennedy
and 2 guards of your choice, but rotate sutton in to spell the big men, not guards
Maybe next year...
but JVP and Kennedy are too slow on the defensive end, unless you went to a 2-3 zone and had Kennedy in the middle with Mouph and JVP guarding the wings. Mouph, however, would foul out in 5 minutes.
Sigh.

The silver lining is that the juniors are the ones playing like croutons
So maybe things will get better in 2 years.
