Final: Stretches Of Bad Play Burn Villanova As Marquette Wins 81-77
Another slow start and a great performance from Darius Johnson-Odom ultimately doomed Villanova today, but there were some solid stretches of basketball and some encouraging signs against one of the conference's toughest teams. Eventually there were just too many lapses in focus and not enough offense for long stretches to keep up however, and 'Nova fell 81-77.
Down just 40-37 at the half, it looked like this was a game Villanova could steal in the 2nd half if they continued their good play from the end of the 1st half. But it wasn't meant to be.
More after The Jump.
Villanova came out in the 2nd half asleep and Marquette quickly stretched their lead to as much as 15. Much of that was due to Jae Crowder, who looked like he finally wanted to play after a terrible first half. The slow start there was really what killed them.
Give this 'Nova team credit though - they sure don't quit. Despite bricks being thrown up left and right by both Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek, timely contributions from Markus Kennedy (who played the best game of his career), JayVaughn Pinkston and Darrun Hilliard continued to keep Villanova afloat.
But as the minutes waned down, there were too many of the same mistakes we're used to to really get back into the game. All 3 of Villanova's point guards (Wayns, Hilliard and Ty Johnson) also fouled out, which meant a late game appearance from Dallas Ouano.
In the end, Marquette was able to keep Villanova at arm's length though, and take the W despite doing everything in their power to let Villanova almost take this one.
P.S. Where the hell was James Bell?

Bell
Thought he was standing on the bench with his warm-up jacket on during one of the final TOs. Was he injured in the 1st half?
No clue
Nobody mentioned a thing all game except that he wasn’t playing.

Stop Shooting Threes
It seems so simple to me. Maybe I am missing something. We keep firing up bad threes and it costs us game after game. We have big men and we have guards that drive. But 3 of 17 shooting from three is too many wasted trips to make up for. If we go to the basket those 17 attempts we win the game. It IS that simple. We are a good free throw team. Why do we do this? Do we know how to game-day coach this team?
The shot selection I thought was better today
A lot of those 3’s came late when we were down big. The biggest issue was the turnovers. Wayyyyy too many for no reason at all.

17 3PA...
is an improvement over the 25+ attempts in other games. 3 made is horrible though.
Young teams play poorly in stretches. It does seem like progress is being made (JVP), but Cheek is the guy that is holding this team back 2-10, 1-7 from 3, 1-1 from the line. 4 other starters all in double figures. If he gets it together, they start winning. Everyone else was restrained from 3 except Ash, who was 2-5, which I will live with.

young guys? one of the leaders in TO is Wayns and he is a junior. Stop making excuses and take care of the ball.
Agree with Cheek, he’s getting to many opportunities. Send him to the bench and start some of the freshmen. Time to recognize that Cheek is a bust. Great six man but not a starter.
Who do you start over him?
Bell? Ash?

Wayns is fine...
yes, his TO’s are a bit up, but that is the function of him having the ball in his hands almost all the time. His FG and FT % are up from last year, as is his steals and rebounds.
