Big East Expansion: Conference Was Close To Adding Navy & Air Force

Just when I thought things couldn't get any weirder, or more depressing for that matter, Brett McMurphy just dropped this bomb regarding Big East expansion. According to industry sources, the Big East was in the final stages of adding Navy as a football-only member of the conference.

Here is is according to McMurphy:

No official invitation was extended by the league, but both parties had extensive discussions about Navy joining the league in football only and it very well could have happened in the next couple of weeks, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.

Besides Navy, the Big East also was targeting Air Force and league sources felt confident both schools would have been Big East members, perhaps within the next year – that is until Pitt and Syracuse announced they were leaving for the ACC.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Navy wouldn't be a bad option as a football-only member. They have a big following, their own TV deal (that likely would be absorbed by the conference and add revenue for all), and they're pretty friggan good for a service academy. Just ask Notre Dame.

But in reality, that is an embarrassment for the conference. Not to pile on Navy, but if the Big East wants to be taken seriously, they absolutely cannot be talking to the service academies to join.

All that would typically funny to laugh at, ya know, if we weren't trying to join as a football-member. I can't believe I'm saying this either, but Syracuse and Pitt helped us dodge the a kill-shot in our FBS football dreams.
