Breaking News: ACC Adding Big East's Syracuse, Pitt

It's a done deal.  The ACC has accepted the applications for Syracuse and Pittsburgh.  More information will be available after a 9:30 AM conference call between the ACC and the media.  See below for recent quotes from ACC officials.

Duke President Richard Broadhead:

"The ACC is a strong, united conference that is only going to get better with the addition of the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University.  Both schools are committed to competing at the highest level of academics and athletics. We welcome them as full partners in the ACC."

ACC Commissioner John Swofford:

"The ACC has enjoyed a rich tradition by balancing academics and athletics and the addition of Pitt and Syracuse further strengthens the ACC culture in this regard.  Pittsburgh and Syracuse also serve to enhance the ACC's reach into the states of New York and Pennsylvania and geographically bridges our footprint between Maryland and Massachusetts. With the addition of Pitt and Syracuse, the ACC will cover virtually the entire Eastern Seaboard of the United States."

Probably...

the Big East is about to be dead. It is going to end up being a one or two bid league – like the A10 with a bit better pedigree. ’Nova can be a Butler or Gonzaga in basketball.

Do you guys really think a conference with Nova, G’Town, St. John’s, Marquette and possibly Xaiver and Butler would be a one or two bid league? That is insane. DO you think that we can’t hold the markets in NYC, Philly, Chicago and DC? The best thing that happened to Nova was the football schools rescinding the invite – they would have left you guys high and dry with nowhere to go. No panic, we’ll all be fine.

I'll go ahead and panic all the same.

What about the prospect of merging the remnants of the Big 12 and the Big East? Ok—losing Pitt and Syracuse, but gaining Kansas and K-State? We’d muddle along in football to be sure, but still be a basketball powerhouse.

The issue is less about NCAA bids

And more about $$$ – that conference isn’t getting a big TV deal

I prematurely shot my wad, if you will, on what was supposed to be a dry run, and now it looks like I have something of a mess on my hands.

I agree, time to panic

We are royally screwed.

They should have..

made a move in football 10 years ago. The school and others, like Georgetown, need to move quickly. Need to find a home for the basketball program and other sports teams other than the football team. Don’t forget NBC/Comcast is rebranding Versus and going after ESPN. A good TV deal could be had for basketball.

Early word on NBC though

Is that they want to fight them for football. NBC hasn’t really done any basketball other than the Olympics and when they used to have the NBA playoffs.

I could see them making a deal for the basketball-only league, but can’t see them paying a ton for that.
