Morning Cup O' Mud: Competition For Darrel Young?
Light day of news, so we'll get right to it - it's NFL preseason and this New York Giants fan (head over to Big Blue View for more of the G-Men!) had a great time watching Big Blue play last night. The starters even stayed in until deep in the second quarter - it was almost half a game!
So I started wondering about Darrel Young, who was named the starter at fullback for the Washington Redskins a weeks ago. Turns out, a veteran might be coming back to squeeze the 'Nova man out of some reps. That and more in this morning's links.

There's actually a nice piece on Darrel
as the lead article on the Washington Post sports section:
I’m a Skins fan, so I’ve seen him play in both preseason games and I can say without a doubt that he’s been an absolute beast, and Mike Sellers getting reps is just to sort out whether he or Keiland Williams would be better for depth. The Shanahans (and the fan base) love what Darrel’s shown so far, and he’s had a number of nice plays both catching the ball and blocking. Mike Sellers has some value on special teams, and he’s also served as a good mentor to DY. He’s definitely the future at FB for the Redskins, as you can tell by these quotes:
"D.Y. is awesome, man. He deserves to be the starter," Sellers said. "He’s the man."
"He’s like my big brother," Young said. "I know inside he still wants to be playing fullback. But the way he’s grooming me, still helping me, it makes me appreciate everything so much more."
"D.Y. is an excellent fullback," Shanahan said. "I can tell you that after being around him the first couple of weeks. He’s very smart, very competitive. It’s hard to find guys in that 250-pound range that can block and catch the ball like he can."
I wouldn’t worry about DY, he’s the man at FB.
By the way, you have my sympathies for whatever the hell is going on with the litany of CB injuries in NY.
Nice!
Glad to hear he’s doing well – I always loved him when I was at school.
I prematurely shot my wad, if you will, on what was supposed to be a dry run, and now it looks like I have something of a mess on my hands.
