West Virginia AD Oliver Luck Talks Big East Expansion & Villanova
West Virginia Athletic Director Oliver Luck broke the silence tonight on the possible Big East Expansion, pretty much confirmed what everybody thought about Villanova's potential move to the conference in football. Luck was a guest on MetroNews Statewide Sportsline tonight and put a few things out there. You can listen to the audio at the link above.
"There are two sort of questions I think that people have," Luck said. "One is really what are the facilities that Villanova is able to use and how do those fit into the Big East with what we have now with our football schools. Are those really at a level that are BCS, automatic qualifier appropriate for a conference like ours? I think that's the first question and obviously the conference didn't feel quite comfortable with all the information regarding what I would call the infrastructure question."
In case you're having trouble reading through all that - he's basically saying that Villanova isn't big-time enough for the big bad, Big East football conference. But Luck wasn't done there.
"When we talk about adding a 10th member, the question is what does that 10th member bring and what are the other options, quite honestly," Luck continued. "It's sort of like buying a car, you don't go and just look at one model. You look around and say what are the different options, what are the different prices, and what are the plusses and minuses? I think a lot of schools were interested in having a better sense of what other possibilities would be out there."
Once again, he's pretty much saying Villanova doesn't bring a lot, and that people think a school like UCF or Houston could do a lot more for the conference.
None of that is really news to anyone who's been following this travesty closely, but it does confirm the notion that there are definitely schools out there (West Virginia included) that are NOT in favor Villanova's move.

I thInk he highlighted the main issue we have. A 30,000+ stadium. If we had the Linc locked up this would not be an issue. Presentation done, welcome Nova. Instead we presented a stadium o

option that provided little incentive for the Big East to add us. Obviously we need to include air bags, power windows, and xm radio to get WVU to care (probably throw in a gun rack). The only way this works in Novas direction is if we resolve our stadium issue.

30,000 will be fine...
The main issue is getting an agreement with PPL to do that sewed up. That WILL get done from everything I’m hearing.
I prematurely shot my wad, if you will, on what was supposed to be a dry run, and now it looks like I have something of a mess on my hands.

Apparently it wasn't 'formal'

With less sarcasm on my part...
Seems the miscommunication was Nova’s focus on “minimum requirement” of 15,000 paid attendance, and other BE schools’ “minimum expectation” of 30,000 seats. I still think Franklin Field is an obvious solution, at least for part of the schedule. WVU, Pitt, and the larger draws at FF. UConn, Ville, and the smaller draws at PPL.
Franklin Field is awful
I wouldn’t want to go to games there having been to ‘Nova-Penn games…yeah it’s big, but it’s a friggan dump (I’d compare it to Nassau Coliseum) and there is no parking or tailgating there. That’s a huge deal.

Franklin Field not so bad...
I guess it is in the eye of the beholder… Similar condition to VU on campus stadium I think, but bigger. Penn State’s stadium also a dump, imo, but great venue for a game. University City is a pretty nice location. 100% agree on parking. Penn Park is adjacent, is located between the field and the river, and is currently stripped for a plan park rehab. This could be 1/2 parking, 1/2 park. OK changing the Penn Park plan is an issue, but so is expanding PPL, contracting the Linc, or building a stadium. For 2 or 3 games a year, should be workable. I wish I could post the satellite view from google maps…
I can't get behind Franklin Field..
PPL is a much better venue.

Citizens park is the best option
Just need to beg the Phillies.
Should Villanova de-emphasize football if they don't go up
Why should we continue to play 1AA if we loose 4 million dollars per year? Its not a draw and doesn’t bring in Allumni $$ for the most part. Why not start playing more of the Ivy’s and Patriot league teams with no scholarships? I’m ready to buy my season tickets for an upgrade but I don’t see any reason to stay at the level we are currently at. Programs are leaving the Colonial league quickly for many reasons and we should have a plan that if Villanova football is not welcomed to the Big East what do we do. 4 million is alot of money that could be used for other things.
