Villanova Football & The Big East Expansion: Plenty Of Blame To Go Around

The original plan for Villanova wasn't one we were fully fond of. The Big East invited Villanova to join the conference as an FBS football member, and back in early September, Villanova confirmed it's interest in making the move. Of course, our initial reaction was "SAY YES!" - because football is where the money is in college sports and it seemed like a no-brainer.

But Villanova had to do it's due diligence on the matter, and as painful as the last 7 months have been while NOBODY from the administration will say anything and while we dig and claw for information, it was the responsible thing to do. And you know what? All signs of Villanova football joining the Big East point to yes!

So why is it that Villanova had to delay their official vote on the football move? Because apparently, the the communication not only amongst the conference members, but between Villanova and the Big East was so astoundingly horrible that at the 11th hour it was discovered that Villanova's plan wasn't up to the expectations of the conference members.

On the surface, the Big East looks to have screwed the pooch pretty bad on this one - but we're not letting oursevles off the hook either. We'll break it down after The Jump.

Star-divide

To the Big East Conference  - REALLY?!

Let's call a spade a spade. You should be embarrassed at what transpired on Sunday. You're spinning this story like Sunday's conference call was the first time you heard people were uncomfortable with Villanova using PPL Park. Let's say that this is true. HOW ARE YOU ONLY FINDING THIS OUT NOW?!

It's been a solid 5-6 months that PPL Park has pretty much been the only viable option for Villanova since Franklin Field is controlled by Penn and Lincoln Financial is still in a contract with Temple. So you're telling me that once you found out Villanova was going to vote yes (which by the way, has been out there in back-channels for well over 2 weeks now), you finally decided to ask if everyone was okay with this?!

Everyone who was involved in this process from the conference's perspective, you should be ashamed of yourself.

To Villanova's administration - You're not free of blame either.

I can defend you needing time to investigate this move. We're a small school, and this is a move that no matter what we decided, is going to alter our future dramatically. But after TCU almost immediately accepted an invitation to join the Big East in November, and the Big East came out in January and said they weren't going to wait for you, there should have been a bit more urgency.

More importantly though, how could you let this happen? And how are you still sitting on your hands? The Big East screwed you, a member of their conference. I mean, really screwed you. You were prepared to join them on Tuesday.

Now they're telling you that even though EVERYONE knew what your plans for the stadium, your timeline, etc. for months, they're telling you to do better at the last possible minute. How are you not going public? Spread some egg o their face. They're the bad guys here, but we're coming off like the whipping boy, because we're sitting here and taking it.

To John Marinatto - Earn your paycheck!

You're the leader of the conference. By all accounts, you're in favor of Villanova joining for football. This is all on you. You let Rutgers and Pitt make a power move at the last possible minute. Time for you to broker this deal. I've never had much faith in you as a leader, but you can prove me wrong here.

Villanova is ready and waiting to sign on the dotted line and re-shape the Big East for years to come. You want them, they want you. MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Make no mistake - this should scare everyone.

This is a backstabbing from the Big East in every sense of the word. It appears Villanova was lied to from the outset. We were told that all we had to do was say 'yes.' That wasn't the case - apparently it was 'say yes' and then we'll let you know.

And let's remember that we voted yes to inviting TCU in to all sports. They're crap in basketball with no signs of improvement. So if we don't join for football, how do they help us? Not at all is the answer. So we're a team player, and now the same schools we decided to help out are jamming a sharp object into us.

This spells trouble not only for Villanova, but for all the basketball-only schools. Be afraid, be very afraid if this thing doesn't work out for Villanova.

Hopefully though, it all will.

I always knew I hated Pitt for a reason. Now it has some validity. This just makes the Big East look small time and it’s embarassing.

It's incredible

That as a three-decade member like us, they would do this to us. I know we’re rivals, but good lord, this has nothing to do with a rivalry, but with the future of a fellow school

You kind of had a feeling..

from the beginning that this would not be pretty. This why the Big East is decades behind the likes of the Big Ten and SEC.

I am epic win.

Exactly...

Sucks that the ACC is sitting on their hands in regards to us. They could afford to carry our football team while we get up and running and they’d probably love to have us in basketball.

Just because of what happened the last 24 hours...

I’d jump on the ACC right now if they invited us. Screw the BE is my current mentality, even though that’s very reactionary of me.

I don't see what the BE football schools...

are tyring to accomplish? Say it ends up being TCU, Pitt, WVU, L’Ville, Cincy, USF, Cuse, UConn, UCF, and Rutgers. I’m not sure they last very long as a BCS conference. If they leave the Big East to form their own conference, does the BCS tag go with them?

I am epic win.

Agreed 100%

Although they will last as a BCS conference…basketball would take a bit of a hurt though because the bball-only schools aren’t exactly worthless.

Sorry

But anyone who thinks the ACC wants anything to do with Nova is delusional. Just like those misguided Pitt fans who thought the B1G would come calling. Although maybe a Nova-BC trade could work?

If the super-league scenario happens, ACC is at least calling 'Nova

They don’t have the Philly market currently. You’re insane if you think they have absolutely no interest if the Super-Conference scenario ends up happening.

Wow

“Insert Large City” Market and Super-Conference in the same sentence? You can’t claim a market if Penn State football still dominates your viewership. Not that it matters because the super conference apocalypse already passed.

Funny...

Penn State dominates your market as well.

There will be a second phase of the super conference apocalypse once Texas finally goes independent.

It'll be back

Especially if the BE football schools actually split from the basketball schools, which I think would be foolish of them at this point.

Be objective in your view

B.E. teams split all revenue evenly. That’s what this is about. Playing in an 18k seat arena, there is no possibility that Nova could put in their fair share when everyone else plays in buildings that seat at least 35k. Temple was put out for averaging less than 30k over a 4(?) year span. Letting nova in at 18k would be lowering the bar and, essentially, funding a rivals program. When you join an group you blend into them, not the other way around. As they say, “When in Rome….”. Besides it has been well know that Pitt was very unhappy with Nova’s staduim plan and would trying to block if that was the best they could do. Not hard to tell that as a fan of the B.E., I don’t support this move. This year not withstanding, the problem with B.E. football hasn’t been the level of play. In fact, we were 2nd in the conference ratings behind only the SEC. The problem was the perception of the level of play. Nothing says “We are a BCS conference” like bringing up a team from 1AA to join you.

Then why invite them at all?

That seems to be the biggest problem.

I understand the stadium/attendance concerns...

But if THAT is the sticking point, why were we invited in the 1st place? Don’t tell me the BE didn’t know we can’t build on-campus and that The Linc is booked for another 5-6 years… what other option other than PPL was EVER in play?

All Pitt and Cuse have to do...

To fill their stadiums is get better. They have shown fans will come in droves. Nova has to improve AND get a stadium to fill. We can all agree, that much harder.

by YankeeMePleeze on Apr 11, 2011 5:41 PM EDT reply actions

It definitely is...

But this also isn’t a crappy program coming up to the D1 level. It’s a Top-5 FCS program at the moment, and we’ve seen FCS teams can be competitive with FBS teams.

We aren’t going to light the world on fire the first several years, but it’s not like you have a team that is guaranteed to post 0-fer’s every year.

On any given day....? Yes!

On a weekly basis, not so much. But I do get your point. I just think the gap between FCS and FBS is larger than most poeple recognize. Don’t let JMU fool you.

by YankeeMePleeze on Apr 11, 2011 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

As for attendance...

We get 18-20K in for basketball regularly, so an 18,500 stadium would be guaranteed to be full every weekend because you have really passionate opposing fanbases as well. In fact, I think you’d get a full 30,000 a lot because of the bigger fanbases as well.

Villanova football fans are there – I’m one of them. I just don’t haul myself from NYC to Philly every home game because it’s FCS. I’m a season ticket-holder, and I’d attend every game I could if we joined the Big East. I know tons of people who feel the exact same way.

In the NE, there is a big difference

between bball and ftball interest and there is also the pro sports thing too. Like Nova, Depaul has 20 miles between it campus and arena. (Allstate)It desn’t work well at all. Could be a model Nova may follow once you get past the first couple years of euphoria. Especially if the team is not competing.

by YankeeMePleeze on Apr 11, 2011 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really fair to compare us to DePaul.

We have passionate fans.

I understand there is a huge difference between football and football but we will be there at home.

Now traveling, we won’t do that well at all in the very beginning, and we’ll never get past an average traveling fanbase.

Not really comparing Nova to DeadPaul

Just saying the situations, as far as stadiums are concerned, are very similar and it’s not working for them. Also, once upon a time, DeadPaul had a proud and vibrant program. ….As strange as that may seem. Nothing will suck the life out of a program like losing.

We fill up our off-campus bball arena...

They do not.

Still don’t see the comparison – unless you’re talking about football, and I don’t think DePaul does.

Didn’t you guy get like 500 at the NC game??

Uhhh what?

Thanks for reading…as I said when you take into account that we regularly get tons of fans when stadium size allows (i.e. off-campus), and when you take into account the traveling fanbases, filling 18k isn’t a worry.

'Cuse yes...

Pitt no. Pitt is as good as it’s going to get right now in football and their attendance at games isn’t that great. It’s alumni base is largely in Eastern Ohio, Pittsburgh, and Philly. Don’t sell me Pitt as some great football school. It’s not the late 70’s anymore. With that being said, ’Nova’s stadium issue is a concern as is attendance. I live 10 minutes from the current stadium and I haven’t been to a game in 10 years. I would likely make a trip or two a year to the Linc or PPL if we are playing the Pitt’s, WVU’s and ’Cuses of the world in lieu of JMU, Richmond, and W&M.

I am epic win.

You might want to tone down some of the rhetoric

According to this Delaware County article from yesterday:

http://delcotimes.com/articles/2011/04/10/sports/doc4da266fd4ff7f861801908.txt?viewmode=fullstory

“Union CEO Nick Sakiewicz said the team did not have a deal in place for Villanova to play at PPL Park.”

If true, Villanova doesn’t have a deal in place to play football in the Union’s stadium. I’ll bet the “due diligence” is going to require to get all of the I’s dotted and T’s crossed. Not sure you can blame the Big East schools for wanting that to be in place…

by usffan on Apr 11, 2011 8:45 PM EDT reply actions

I get that...

But the reports are that half the conference doesn’t want them in at all – even IF they had a solid deal in place.

So this is all based on rumors?

All that’s been officially said is that the Big East didn’t approve of Villanova’s plan. What plan? They don’t have a contract for a stadium that would meet FBS standards! Kind of hard to ask 8 universities to enter into a legally binding commitment if Villanova doesn’t have a legally binding place to play those games. Now IF Villanova gets a solid deal in place and THEN some schools stand in their way, the outrage here would be justified.

You can just bet that if there is a problem, Pitt is somehow involved. It’s a tradition there.

Big East

BE is a sinking ship unless they go ahead and become a super-conference. Think they are making a huge mistake in overlooking ECU!!! BE and ECU can help each other….ECU will only get better if they became a member and would provide much more competition in ACC country for recruiting!!

BE better grab all the schools they can before the other conferences come knocking again!!!
