postGame: South Florida 70 Villanova 69

It has all come crashing down on Villanova. The Wildcats were stunned at Madison Square Garden, blowing a 16 point halftime lead to the South Florida Bulls.

Game ended approximately 9:24 PM eastern time.  South Florida Bulls defeat Villanova Wildcats 70-69.  Some notes on the game are below.

-At Madison Square Garden in the first round of the Big East Tournament, Villanova came out lethargic in the opening minutes against the lowly Bulls of South Florida.  The 15th seeded Bulls stormed out to an 8-0 lead, prompting Jay Wright to call a quick timeout.  By the first media break, guard Shaun Noriega had already hit 4 triples for USF.

-Luckily, Corey Stokes' hamstring was good enough to go in this one, and he responded with numerous bombs to quickly cut into the deficit.   Halfway through the opening stanza, the Cats had knotted the game up at 26.

-It looked like a seesaw affair might be brewing, but Villanova really imposed their will over the last eight minutes of the first half.  A bevy of players got involved in the scoring, and the Wildcats really clamped down on the defensive end.  All in all, Nova ended the half on a 23-7 run to create some breathing room heading into the locker room.

-Halftime score: Villanova 49 South Florida 33

Star-divide

-For a team that lacked a killer instinct when they were winning games, it would've been nice to see Villanova put away the Bulls early in the second twenty minutes.  This was not the case though, as USF used a quick 7 point run to slice the deficit to a manageable nine.

-With the Cats leading 57-47 and about twelve minutes remaining, South Florida went on an 8-0 spurt to make it a 2 point game.  Villanova was already over the foul limit, and the hot shooting in the first half was nowhere to be found.

-By the last media timeout, Villanova led 61-59, meaning the Cats only had amassed a total of 12 points in the second half up until that point.  The game was right there for the underdog Bulls to take, because it sure looked like Villanova wanted no part of winning this one.

-Nova led 65-64 with 90 secs left, and after getting fouled, Maalik Wayns calmly sank a pair of free throws to put them up three.  The usually sure-handed point guard for the Bulls, Anthony Crater, turned the ball over on the ensuing possession.  Corey Stokes was fouled, but he missed the front end of a 1-1, which gave USF some hope with forty ticks on the clock.  Another turnover by the Bulls and subsequent foul put Stokes on the line again, but he missed the front end of a 1-1 for the second straight trip.  An Isaiah Armwood foul gave South Florida 2 freebies to cut the lead to 1.  Off the inbounds pass, Maalik Wayns turned it over and the Bulls converted the mistake into a layup and their first lead since the first half.  Maalik made up for his mistake by sinking 2 free throws after being fouled at other end, which gave the Cats a 1 point cushion yet again.  A porous Villanova defense though allowed Crater to drive right to the hoop for a layup with 5 secs left.  With no timeouts, Wayns rushed the ball up court, but his three point attempt at the buzzer clanged off the back iron, and the Cats notched their 5th straight loss.

I have nothing to say right now after this collapse.

First Four? NIT? 10 seed?

The committee loves Villanova and the Big East, so I reckon Nova will get something close to the latter, but it is still worth fearing. Or maybe hoping for. Save some embarrassment.

9-10 record against Big East Teams..

with loses to 3 of the bottom five teams in the league. Doesn’t scream NCAA tourney team to me.

21-10

Weak bubble. Power conference the committee loves.

Villanova will get in. It won’t be pretty and they will likely lose embarrassingly to a far superior team in the 1st round, but they will be the Big East’s 11th team.

I'd almost rather we didn't...

Some major changes from the coaching staff are needed. Plus, we can’t keep wasting scholarships on guys like Sutton and Armwood who add nothing on the offensive.

This one is 100% on

Wright. The offensive philosophy in the second half was unacceptable. Welcome to the NIT.

We're going to the dance

Relax. I agree that we suck, but we are still going.

And for the record, I will still proudly waste the $$ on a bracket to pick us to win it all as I have since I received that transfer acceptance letter in the Spring of 2007.

I understand the frustration

Trust me. I do. There’s no excuse for quite possible the worst half in Jay Wright’s tenure at Nova. But come on boys and girls we are going dancing. Do we deserve it based on this trainwreck we’ve witnessed since January 26th at Providence? Absolutely not. But that is why teams play an entire season and not just 13 games.

I agree

Villanova will be dancing. The only question is how embarrassing the result is.

Like it or not..

those 13 games count more than the others. From 2005-2009 nobody, nobody in the country got more out his talent than Jay. Since then, few have gotten less from the level of talent he has.

Jay can't do it all by himself

Take a look at those 2005-2009 teams. Look at the coaching staff. Associate Head Coaches and Assistants go a long way. A lot longer than any of us realize.

That offense he trotted out in the 2nd half..

is on him.

He's the HC

And he should take all of the blame just like all the credit is assigned to him during the good times. However, who is to say that an Assistant should have stepped up and said “Jay, what the eff are we doing? This is insane”

by _TheDream on Mar 8, 2011 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

How do we know that they didn't..

and he blew them off. It was clear to anyone listening that they needed to speed up the offense.

Also, who brought Armwood and Sutton into the program? I’m sure they are great kids and I hope they reap the rewards of a great education, but they aren’t Division 1 basketball players let alone Big East players.

Jay lost this one.

Why slow the offense down in the second half? I don’t get it. I am almost glad to see the seniors go, I wish they could take Sutton with them too. Im pretty sure it was Wayns vs usf in the 2nd half. Hey was the lone bright spot for the team this year.

FYI...

I believe no team has ever lost 5 in a row and made the tourney. Maybe we are the first, but we are not the lock others think we are. Selection Committee might make an example of us much like they did to ‘Cuse the year they won 20 games and didn’t make the tourney.

Debating a follow up post on this

But just hear me out guys and gals. What would we proclaim as the glory years of Villanova under Jay Wright? 2004-05 to 2008-09? During that time period, Villanova had an Associate Head Coach on the staff. Since the 2008-09 season (when Chambers left):

Lets take a look at the Coaching Staff for each season.

2004-05: Fred Hill (Associate Head Coach) & Brett Gunning
2005-06: Brett Gunning (Associate Head Coach), Patrick Chambers
2006-07: Brett Gunning (Associate Head Coach), Patrick Chambers
2007-08: Brett Gunning (Associate Head Coach), Patrick Chambers, Doug West
2008-09: Patrick Chambers (Associate Head Coach), Doug West

SINCE Final Four Run, elimination of “Associate Head Coach”:

2009-10: Assistant Coaches Chris Walker, Doug West & Jason Donnelly
2010-11: Assistant Coaches Chris Walker & Jason Donnelly

the point

Is that consistency and experience are vital for both the continued success of the program as well as growth and maturation of each individual player – especially young stars such as Wayns, Cheek, etc.

by _TheDream on Mar 8, 2011 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

It's deeper than that...

Wayns has developed. He’s the only player playing with confidence. Pena got better as a player over the last two seasons, but lacks any leadership skills. Stokes got better as well. Fisher isn’t much better than his Freshman Year.

Lack of an Associate Head Coach probably isn’t helping, but there seems to be something else wrong. Somewhere along the line this year, Jay lost the team. Next year is probably the most important year for ‘Nova in a long time. The team doesn’t have to be great next year, but it can’t collapse down the stretch again.

Good Assistants or Bad Assistants...

should be able to just roll the ball out and beat teams like Rutgers, Providence, and USF who have each have 1 player that would get minutes if they were on your team.

At some point this season it looks like Jay lost the team or the team lost Jay.

I'm not absolving Jay of blame

Not at all. I will admit that I know nothing of how a staff is assembled and would assume that Jay would have 1st say over his own staff with perhaps budget limits or suggestions from the AD may also come into play. Given that final say of a staff most likely comes down to the Head Coach, he takes full responsibility which is fine.

The point is that the ability to hold onto a team and prevent said team from a collapse like the one experienced the past two years is a representation of the entire Coaching Staff. When things are going as BAD as they have two Februarys in a row, what does a team naturally do? Analyzes their mistakes and looks for ways to improve whether it be team strategy on offense/defense or specific correctable flaws noticed by a member of the staff after hours of watching tape.

These are talented kids and its either a lack of execution of a good gameplan or execution of an average gameplan. The problem is that this is not an average program.

I would put more blame on Jay's staff..

if the whole season was an epic failure, but they looked like a different, better team until the Rutgers game. After that game it looks like the staff and the players just kind of lost it.

There has to be more to this than just weak assistant coaches.

a. where has Cheek been for the last month? he seems to play OK (better than most) when he is in

why do wayns and fisher always have to look to Jay when they’re in the halfcourt offense? shouldn’t they know how to run it by now? or is Wright too stubborn to trust the guards to make something happen

c. it looks like Fisher is still afraid to push his knee to the limit. there were quite a few chances to shoot it or drive on what could have been fast break but he really didn’t lead them tonight

by travis_b on Mar 9, 2011 1:54 AM EST reply actions

Seems like a combination

of a lot of different things. Fisher really has not improved from his freshman year. Sutton and Armwood have no offensive skills. Yaru has made some strides but still for the most part is lost at the offensive end. Cheek who should of made improvement has not.
I believe this falls on the whole team, coaches, players and what Jay is trying to do. Why he sits on the ball is beyond me. Nova has no one to post up, or they never run a post up.
They should make the dance, but this team will go out one and done.
