Final: Villanova Holds Off Penn's Second Half Rally, Wins 73-65
On Saturday night at the Pavilion, the Villanova Wildcats edged their Philadelphia counterparts, the Penn Quakers, by the score of 73-65. The youngsters for the Cats, specifically Darrun Hilliard, played a stellar game to help snap Nova's two game losing streak. Junior big man Mouphtaou Yarou led the way for the home squad with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Hilliard contributed 13 points on an efficient 5-9 shooting. For Penn, Zach Rosen poured in 21 points and grabbed 6 boards.
The 6 day layoff for Villanova was much needed, and the extra rest allowed the Cats to score the first 8 points of the contest. The trio of Ty Johnson, Achraf Yacoubou, and Hilliard provided a balanced scoring attack in the first half, which resulted in a lead as much as 18 for Nova.
As usual, Yarou was a beast in the paint and on the glass, although to be fair, Penn doesn't have a true inside presence. The biggest positive in the first stanza was Villanova's defense, especially their perimeter d. Jay Wright and his squad have been heavily criticized for this, but the Cats held the Quakers to 0-8 from behind the arc in the first half.
More after The Jump.
Young teams usually struggle to put teams away, and the Cats were a prime example of this against Penn. Being up 18 at the half, Villanova did not have the killer instinct, which allowed the visitors to make a game of this one late. Villanova's defense was not on point like they were in the first half, as Nova struggled mightily with the pick and roll. Furthermore, the Quakers started to hit some threes and the lead dwindled down to single digits, where it remained for most of the second half. Penn cut it to 4 with twenty seconds left, but the Cats hit their free throws to ice the game.
Prior to this game, I really thought this was a must win for the inexperienced Wildcats. Most of the freshmen probably have not been a part of too many 2 game losing streaks, so a win was huge for their confidence. As a fan, you have to be impressed with the play of the freshmen.
Wayns and Yarou are going to be off in some games, so production from the likes of Ach, Hilliard, Johnson, and Markus Kennedy will be a necessity as the season progresses. It's an only 8 point win, but it's a win nonetheless with very tough games on the horizon in the form of Missouri at MSG on Tuesday and Saturday at Temple.

Screens..
I only saw most of the 2nd half. Nova does not defend screens very well. Need to hedge out harder, especially on three point shooters. Also, Nova runs under screens, which allows open threes. I understand why they run under all screens (to prevent the drive), but they give up too many open looks from 3.
Cheek should never shoot another three again.

I agree the same.
I watched Arkansas and UConn at bit today. Arkansas is just relentless on the D end. But defense is all about effort IMO. And Nova’s effort I thing lacks in stretches.
Big men are terrible at helping on the screens.

Agree
Hillard is a better option on the offensive end then him. He had wide open looks in the second half and clanged every thing. He really has become a huge disappointment.
Come on
It’s been 7 games!
He could come out and drop 30 against Missouri and then you’ll be loving him again.
He’s in a shooting slump. He’ll get out of it.

it's not the slump that bothers me
it’s shot selection-shots with 30 secs on the shot clock off of 1 pass, shots from behind the arc with a defender right in his face….he needs to get to the rim, not shoot the type of shots im mentioning
Just my opinion Chris
No hate towards Cheek, just at this point in the season where the Cats have played one good team and Cheek is struggling. If he is struggling now, the Big East schedule is not one to bust out of slump in.
That's fair
But I still think it’s way too small a sample size to call Hilliard a much better offensive option. Hilliard hasn’t truly shown me much other than his ability to hit an outside shot when left wide open.

Concerns
I know they are young but I’ve been watching the team play now, and I mean watching every game (thanks to TIVO) for ages. I always see the same things, the biggest of which to me seems like a) no idea what play to run b) no confidence – killer instinct, and this was absent even when there were more senior players starting. I guess we are going to live and die by a high pick from Yarou and then a drive and dish from Malik in every game this year. Hats off to Malik because he is amazing around the rim but when you are dishing to the likes of Cheek i don’t like our chances. I guess for me the crux of the problem as much as I hate to say it is Wright’s coaching. I mean tell me that when Rosen started bombing 3’s towards the end yesterday you weren’t saying to yourself “Here we go again” and then I think Pinkston had a turn over late too which is just unacceptable in those final minute situations. The bright spot for me, if we are going with the “they’re still young thing” was the way they broke the press for an easy and 1 play in the final minutes. Against Missouri I think we have a little size edge but we need that killer instinct and confidence.
i watched mizzou on tv a few weeks ago
their offense is no joke…i hope jay has the team ready because if not, they could get run out of the garden
Denmon is going to make us wanna tear our hair out
He’s an amazing talent

I wasn't worried at the end yesterday
The end of the Santa Clara game was as fluky as it gets. A LOT went wrong. It was hard to say that upon first watch but having re-watched it, it was a little freaky.
