Villanova's Free Throw Rates A Positive So Far
The Villanova Wildcats are 3-0 so far this season, and they're doing it with 5 new players donning the uniform. While the last 2 wins haven't been easy by any stretch, we're seeing several positives in a team that right now may still lack an identity.
The emergence of Dom Cheek to compliment Wayns has helped add to the scoring threats in the Villanova offense, as has the improved post-play of Mouph Yarou. But perhaps the biggest improvement this team has shown is their ability to not rely on the jump shot, and attack the rim.
This has led to an increase in fouls by their opponents, sending Villanova to the line often. Even better, they're converting at a high rate.
After The Jump we'll take a closer look.
Here are the team totals through the first three games.
| Opponent | Made FT's | Attempted FT's | FT % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monmouth Hawks | 22 | 26 | 84.6% |
| La Salle Explorers | 34 | 41 | 82.9% |
| Delaware Blue Hens | 17 | 22 | 77.3% |
Take the La Salle game with a grain of salt because it went to overtime and La Salle was hacking in the final minutes, but these are solid numbers for a young team that doesn't really have an offensive identity.
Without the presence of a true ace from the outside, this young team has been attacking the basket as an alternative and when presented the chance at the charity stripe, they are converting. Here are the individual numbers.
| Player | Made FT's | Attempted FT's | FT % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maalik Wayns | 19 | 20 | 95.0% |
| Dominic Cheek | 22 | 24 | 91.7% |
| Mouphtaou Yarou | 11 | 16 | 68.8% |
| James Bell | 8 | 10 | 80.0% |
| JayVaughn Pinkston | 6 | 10 | 60.0% |
| Darrun Hilliard | 3 | 3 | 100.0% |
| Achraf Yacoubou | 2 | 2 | 100.0% |
| Ty Johnson | 1 | 2 | 50.0% |
| Maurice Sutton | 1 | 2 | 50.0% |
| Total | 73 | 89 | 82.0% |
Our 2 biggest perimeter threats are getting to the line between 7 and 8 times a game on average, which is great to see. But even better to see is that they are both hitting their freebies at a 90%+ clip. It's too early to think that number will hold up, but as long as the team keeps attacking the basket they will continue to draw fouls.
The key then is taking the points when they are given to you, and thus far, they've done a great job of that, hitting 82% of their shots as a team.

Nice look
This is a good sign. The past couple of seasons has featured offensive sets (if you can call them that), that were far too complacent and willing to shoot bad threes. Corey Stokes was probably the worst in this regard (I couldn’t possibly count the number of times we had a lead in the second half and he forced up a three early in the shot clock. That combined with his nonexistent defense made him one of my least favorite Nova players all-time).
The success they had in the Foye and Reynolds eras had as much, probably more, to do with their ability to get to the line and make free throws than hit threes. Far more of the threes were open looks then because the offense was geared to drive first, shoot second. Additionally, there was always a midrange option. I’m not sure if Mouph is ready to take that on, or maybe they can convince Bell to play a couple of steps inside the line, but I think that would be another important feature to making this team successful.
Don't make me bring out the Silky.
I think we get back to drive-first shoot-second a lot this year
There are a lot of guys whose best attribute is their ability to get to the rim. That will lead to more open looks – the main thing is finding a shooter who can consistently hit them.
Mouph’s mid-range J looks great so far. Hopefully he doesn’t fall in love with it too much because he is still a handful under the basket.
