Big East Expansion: Villanova & Temple Sharing Lincoln Financial Field?

Photo

Mike Kern (Temple alum, keep in mind) published an interesting story in the Philadelphia Daily News today that may be shedding some light on the Villanova/Temple aspect to the conference realignment crisis. The most interesting tidbit however, was that Villanova and Temple may be discussing both teams playing home games (or in Villanova's case, probably just a few) at Lincoln Financial Field, home to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Sources said the possibility of Temple and Villanova both playing in Lincoln Financial Field also has been discussed. Temple supposedly has a contract that runs through 2017 and is in fact looking for an extension. Villanova's FBS plans included playing at PPL Park in Chester, home of the MLS Union, which reportedly could be expanded to seat some 30,000.

Now obviously, pure logic suggests that it would be nearly impossible for the Eagles, Temple, and Villanova to all play 100% of their home games there. Hell, there are just 3 weeks when neither the Eagles or Temple are using the facility.

So any involvement of Villanova would probably mean that they'd only play a couple of games there, likely some bigger out-of-conference games (Notre Dame, Penn State?) that would generate huge attendance numbers.

Again, these are really just rumours, at this point, but Villanova would be smart to demand that they get a couple of games there a year if they were to agree to Temple becoming a conference member.

Then again, if you ask me, a fully-packed stadium holding 30,000 people (PPL Park) is a lot more appealing to me than a half-empty stadium holding 35,000 people (LFF). Pittsburgh knows what we're talking about.

And let's not forget, this all really comes down to the Philadelphia Eagles. If memory serves, they had the Temple lease jammed down their throats by the city to get some taxpayer money aid in building the stadium. I doubt they'd be happy about adding another team to the mix.

Thoughts on this everyone?

They can pull this off

It can be done. The catch would be that we would have to play games at the Linc once or twice a year on Wednesdays or Thursdays (so maybe have THOSE games at PPL). But let’s just say we play 4-5 home games a year, and bite the bullet and go on the road/neutral OFTEN.

Three teams can play there. Take a look at Pitt’s schedule, and the Steelers. There are 3 instances where Pitt is playing on Saturday, at Heinz, and then the Steelers play right there again on Sunday.

Make it happen. Make the Linc a happening place to hang around. And while you are at it, start serving beer at the games. WVU does it. It will generate revenue/create jobs.

Sounds like a win-win-win to me.

Beer

It’s shocking to me that schools complain about ‘breaking even’ but refuse to sell alcohol on campus. Did you see the net rev WV was making? Millions.

I prematurely shot my wad, if you will, on what was supposed to be a dry run, and now it looks like I have something of a mess on my hands.

Scheduling

Theoretically you’re talking

1 game there (Temple vs. Villanova)

3 home games at PPL (smallest draws)

2 home games at The Linc (would be awesome) – big OOC draws, the ND’s, PSU’s of the world

That’d be brilliant. I wouldn’t think Temple would have a problem with that either if it got them into the Big East.

Football Venues

If we make the move to FBS, we should play at least 1 home game at Met Life Stadium/The New Meadowlands. We have a strong concentration of alumni in the area, especially alumni with the funds to splurge on football games. Imagine a ’Cuse, UConn or Army -vs-Nova there.

Would be nice to play Army there

If they came on board the Big East – but I don’t think we have the draw of people to support a game like that

Should try to play as many games at LFF as possible.

It has to remember that altho there are plans to expand PPL to 30k that wont happen for at least ten years. The most that it will expand to within 3-4 years is 20k. That 20k expansion also will get rid of the standing room only sections.
