Villanova a 2-seed in the South!
I don't know how, and honestly don't even want to know why, but Villanova locked down a 2-seed in the South Regional. They will face Robert Morris in the 1st round in Providence, Rhode Island on Thursday (Time TBA). Villanova's bracket includes a possible matchup with 3-seed Baylor in Houston for the Sweet 16, a situation that is just about the only negative side to their draw.
Most experts had 'Nova landing as either a 3 or a 4, so the 2-seed came as a big shock to everyone around the country. But hey, we're not complaining!
If you are thinking of going out to Providence (we are!) here's one place you can check on tickets.
More after the jump...
Below are the seedings for the South Regional:
- Duke
- Villanova
- Baylor
- Purdue
- Texas A&M
- Notre Dame
- Richmond
- California
- Louisvile
- Saint Mary's
- Old Dominion
- Utah State
- Siena
- Sam Houston State
- Robert Morris
- Play-in game
Villanova will play the winner of Richmond/Saint Mary's in the 2nd round on Saturday in Providence should they win on Thursday. Andrew will be providing more analysis on the bracket shortly, but for now discuss in the comments!

Really couldn't have gone any better...
So excited, I’ll be at Saturday’s game with the rest of the guys who write here…
My father was a military man. Guess I wasn't such a 'good soldier.' Anyways, when I was 35 he attempted to give me a crew-cut while I was asleep. I woke up, broke his arm, haven't seen him since.
I’m excited for the possible Saint Mary’s-Nova 2nd round game. Living on the West Coast, I’ve seen a lot of Saint Mary’s. They’ll be a tough match up for Nova.

Don't really agree...
Richmond scares me a lot more than Saint Mary’s….

AMAZED with how accurate you are Chris
Everything you said happened!! Villanova got into a region with not only Duke but also Purdue….i have to say Nova got lucky in getting THE easiest region….the anouncers on ESPN agreed that Utah St was a mistake and it just so happened that they are in this very same region….Lets go Nova Final Four Babay!!
LOL I wasn't predicting much of anything...
I was merely saying I WANTED Duke and and Purdue (I thought Purdue would be a 3). But I will certainly take the compliment!
Only way this could have been better is to have Purdue as our 3 and Baylor getting the 4 and facing Duke.

Providence
seriously we got a gift. But who’s complaining?
I live in Providence (less than 10 min from “The Dunk”) so if anyone knows where i can find some fairly inexpensive tickets please email me at vgirardi@stat.brown.edu.
Time to get the killer instinct back!!!
I can’t wait to play duke again. I know lets take one game at a time. But this is our time. Let’s go Nova!!!!!!
Duke is over-rated.
I watched the acc cg vs g.t. and it was a lousy game. i took the 9.5 points. duke had not covered any game in tourney. g.t. i think had 21 or 22 turnovers and duke only one by four points. any other #1 or 2 team would have won by at least 12 points. g.t. did not have a good free throw % either. you guys can beat them handily.
I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. I was building a house, I don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. Bang. "Unforgiven" I drink your milkshake. I drink it up! "There Will BE Blood"

WOw WOw how did Nova get number 2? luckily they got the easiest out of all of the regions though....
Nova needs to step it up
eff you we winning anyway
A.I. IS BACKKKKKKK
Robert Morris
Is the only team we gotta worry about right now. This team cant afford to take anyone for granted!
The two seed...
is shocking. Baylor, if we get that far, will be a real test. That will be a road game. You couldn’t ask for a better draw for ’Nova.
Any idea what time we are playing on Thursday?

Road game?
I’ll give you that Baylor might be a tough opponent, but nobody in Texas cares about basketball, especially not Baylor basketball.
People in Texas...
care about basketball. Not as much as football, but they care. Baylor will have a ton of fans in Houston if they make it that far.

This Bracket is interesting
With the Baylor Fightin’ Carlton Dotsons, Dook, Notre Dame and Purdue it gives us a fightin’ chance.

Richmond/St. Mary's Winner an Issue
2 Seed? Digger and Dickie V. having us in the Final Four? We are getting WAY too much credit. ‘Cats should take Robert Morris but either Richmond or St. Mary’s are quite capable and can take us. As always we will need three guards who shoot over 50% to beat either of these two. Gonsalves and Anderson of the Spiders gave Temple fits and will do so to us. St.Mary’s with Omar Samhan (6’11’ and their star) took it to Gonzaga and can do the same to Nova. As they say, first, it’s a two game tournament. As someone previously said, we really do need to take it one game at a time.

Non-conference games still count
What happens in November and December — who you play and who you beat — is still relevant.
Big shocker.
I was certain the Cats would get a 3-seed, 4 at the lowest, given their recent run of sucktitude. But I can’t complain. I just hope this team doesn’t take it for granted.
The 2010 New York Mets: Maybe it's the Phillies' turn to have 95% of its roster on the DL
The 2009 New England Patriots: At least we got our division title back
The 2009-10 New Jersey Devils: Allergic to second periods
The committee told the truth...
The committee said they wouldnt be weighing the last 10/last 12 games this year. And judging by our favorable seed they were right.
When you look at our total resume it’s not that bad. Look at the 3 seeds – New Mexico, Baylor, Pitt, and Georgetown. Put aside UNM and Baylor… Georgetown finished 3 games behind us in the Big East. They were 10-8 and got a 3 seed! Pitt finished with the same record, beat us at home without a return game @ Nova, and had more bad losses (Seton Hall, S. Florida, Indiana) that we didnt have.
Now look at the other 2’s. Ohio State lost @ WVU, we won @ WVU. WVU finished with the same regular season record as us, plus we split the head-to-head. K-State was in the same Puerto Rico tournament as us but lost to Ole Miss in the semis. Yes all these teams are playing better than us right now, but again the committee looked at the whole season and treated each game equally.
Yes...
and this seems to be lost on Temple fans. I think Temple should be seeded higher, but the way those people are talking, you’d think someone took their first born. When your best wins are ‘Nova and St. Johns, that’s not saying too much. In ’Nova’s defense, our worst loss was to UConn. Every other team we lost to is a 5 seed or better in this tournament save Marq.
Never mistake effort for achievement.

Looking further ahead than I probably should
Duke is not battle tested.
They have the #8 SOS in the nation, but has anybody actually looked at their schedule? The best wins are H-Maryland and @ Clemson, and twice against Georgia Tech. Their toughest opponent was Georgetown. Not a single top-ten team on their schedule. If it comes down to Nova vs. Duke, it will be ther first time all year that they face a team of Nova calibre—provided the cats show up.
Baylor is solid, but they also have no history post-1950. If they get to the Sweet 16, they may be happy just to be there.
All this means is right now I really really just want to get out of the first two rounds unscathed.
