The Open Thread: Villanova-Marquette, BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals

The big boys come out today! While Tuesday and Wednesday are certainly fun and there are definitely some entertaining games (I think Seton Hall scored 200 points the other night), Thursday is when the real basketball begins. All the top seeds held court with the exception of Louisville, who was upended by Cincinnati late last night.
Here is your schedule for today:
- 12:00 p.m. - #22 Georgetown vs. #3 Syracuse, ESPN
- 2:30 p.m. - Marquette vs. #10 Villanova, ESPN (hint: this is the game that matters)
- 7:00 p.m. - Notre Dame vs. #16 Pittsburgh, ESPN
- 9:00 p.m. - Cincinnati vs. #6 West Virginia, ESPN
What will happen today? Will there be a Madison Square Garden left standing after the Hoyas and Orange finish their 3rd bout of the year? Can Villanova get back to their winning ways after a late-season fold? Will Luke Harangody actually try to hug a ref? Will Lance Stephenson put up less than 15 shots?
All these questions, and more, will be answered today!

For the record...
I’ve got ’Cuse in a nail-biter, ’Nova is a comfortable W, Notre Dame in a not-so-surprising upset, and West Virginia in a comfortable W.
Born Ready
Over/Under on shots taken is 15 for the first half
Over/Under on how many missed Free Throws between Cincy and West Virginia?

Depends on the stripes...
If that game gets typical Big East refs…. i’d say 25 is a possibility..
See the thing is we gotta get those refs who were doing the MAAC tournament last week to come in and put their whistles in their pockets.
We in the jungle, let the kids play baby!
Look at the scoreboard Buddha I'm doing fine
I've seen Cincy 3 times in the last week
You guys will win by 10.
Also, congrats on the blog, looks great.
It's not you, it's me.

Hey, good timing.
New ‘Nova blog, new Marquette blog, just in time for your boys to rip out (what’s left of) our hearts again.
Good luck today.
I want G'Town to win...
don’t really care who we would have to play, but Syracuse fans would rather win the BET than the NCAA’s it feels like. That’s the way they treat this. Plus, losing it to G’Town would REALLY hurt.
Onuaku looks like he just blew out his knee.
Awful for him, but that is REALLY going to hurt Syracuse who is hurting for big men even with him.
Yikes
Onuaku on ‘Cuse is hurt. Looks serious. Not good. Don’t like to see this.

Looks like Hoya Paranoia is back—they’re just killing guys out there now. Is this 1984 again? Are we all in the Hot Tub Time Machine?

Its like a. . . .
Hot Tub Time Machine.
Look at the scoreboard Buddha I'm doing fine
Cuse in trouble on the frontline
Onuaku out and Jackson just picked up his 4th. That’s it for big men for them.
Georgetown looking like they want to lose
Blowing a 9-point lead with 90 seconds left. It’s like watching the Mets in super-speed in 2007.
Georegtown does it...
Now we just gotta take care of business and we can get some payback for that snowstorm massacre.
I usually don't act like this. . . I swear
I fear for my coworkers opinion of me around 5 PM EST

Decent start so far
But it seems like Nova always has had problems playing a full 40 minutes this year.

Can't watch at work...
how we looking? Time for the 1st half swoon yet?
Never mistake effort for achievement.

Marquette is on a 6-0 run. We are trailing 16-12 after being up 12-10 like 30 seconds ago.

What?
A team hitting 3’s on us. Unheard of!
Never mistake effort for achievement.

Marquette sinking 3's
But also jacking them up at the last second. It won’t continue.
I’d like to see us penetrate more and crash the glass harder. We have a distinct size advantage.
How...
do we only have 17 points at this juncture? Our offense has been figured out.
Never mistake effort for achievement.

Looks like we woke up a little...
Wayns has been a disaster lately though. So reckless with the ball for a PG.
and a liability on D.

That's good to hear...

It’s right about here where I hope Mq hits the wall, starts fouling a bunch and keeps sending us to the line

With only 57 points...
it looks like the offensive woes continue?

Now that that's out of the way,
What seed does everyone think Nova gets? I’m still guessing they are a 3-seed.

3 or 4.
Problem is they were way overrated to begin the season. Committee looks closely at your last 10, which we didn’t play well in.

The Big East refs...
just suck. They suck for everybody. It’s not like we ever play well in the BET. See what happens next week. If the draw is favorable, we might be able to get to the second weekend. Beyond that is not likely.

zero D from zero
Pena’s lack of defense and turnovers are killing me. Why is Jay trusting him to stop the other team’s penetration? As soon Yarou is taken out Villanova’s defense and rebounding shuts down and they give up bad fouls and easy lay ups.
We simply aren't....
a very good one on one defensive team. I love Scottie, but his defensive strength is in the passing lanes. This team misses D.C. and Anderson.
Never mistake effort for achievement.
